Cumbria and Appleby's Very Own Independent Wine Shop & Cafe Bar

Come and sample the very best of Cafe culture amongst our locely flowers in the courtyard. The courtyard is a real sun trap and we even have two large sunflowers!! The cafe boasts the very best in traditional large espresso machines and has a reputation for the best coffee in Appleby! Rose and her team cook Crepes, Paninis and Drop Scones to order all through the day and at Lunchtime the cafe menu is supplemented with fish and chips. Fresh homemade scones add to the temptations!!!

Nigel has always had a keen interest in wine and did not take any persuasion to run the wine lists in our two restaurants. He has been importing wine now for some 10 years both for his own cellar and for the hotels and it is a natural progression to have a wine shop. He is very keen to do alot more importing and expand what we offer.

The ethos behind the shop is to offer wines, spirits and gifts that you cannot get elsewhere, particularly at a supermarket! At prices that offer value for money. To this end we make our own pickles, marmalade, jams and christmas puddings, and stock a range of wines at all price levels. We have a constantly changing range of special offers at all price levels. Our gift boxes make special presents perhaps for your host on a fishing or shooting trip. We stock the unusual from the very best sherries from Lustau, to rare old Bas Armagnacs from Gascogny and the very finest grappa from Italy.

Marqués de Riscal, Rioja Baron de Chirel 2005  £44.95
Tempranillo with 15% Cabernet. In 66% French and 34% American oak for 24 months. Smoky, lightly charry notes but it is the fruit that drives this wine, with bold, sweet, cassis and hints of cocoa and mint, but tightly-wound and muscular fruit, with a meatiness and a tobacco touch. The palate has lovely silkiness and very pure fruit on the palate, with very smoky and silky tannins, but in the finish the fruit is what persists through the spicy, espresso touches. Gamey and rich, with good fruit.
Marqués de Riscal, Rioja, Gran Reserva 2005   £29.95
Earthy, leathery aromas of baked red fruits fit the classic style. This is full on the palate but not heavy, with cola, molasses, coffee and heady raspberry and plum flavors. A warm finish with fine tannins and ripe flavors of chocolate, lightly baked black fruits and vanilla.

Chateau de Sipian 2005 Tasting Notes £14.95
2005 -a fantastic vintage in Bordeaux. The nose has bundles of black fruit notes, cream, tobacco and herb notes. To taste it shows mocha, dark ripe black fruit, spice, tobacco and dark chocolate with an amazingly harmonious depth and length of flavour. With the ripe fine grained tannins and balanced acidity this wine will cellar for a decade or more if needed but can be decanted and enjoyed now with pleasure.

2013 Greywacke, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc  £16.95
‘Like opening a bag of tree-ripened nectarines’ (Kevin Judd) Deliciously aromatic with a spicy twist and a zesty grapefruit hint. The palate is succulent and tangy – long and concentrated, finishing with a hint of flinty minerality. Producer, Kevin Judd is one of Marlborough’s pioneer winemakers; born in England he grew up in Australia where he studied winemaking at the prestigious Roseworthy College. He moved to New Zealand in 1983 and was the founding winemaker at Cloudy Bay where he remained for 25 years. Greywacke is his own Marlborough label and the fulfilment of a long held dream. Grapes are sourced from his own Greywacke Vineyard (named after the grey clay/sandstone river rocks). All wines are personally made by Kevin Judd.
